Regina Food Bank and Graham
Doing Our Part
In a single day, Graham employees brought about change and helped to make a difference in the lives of perfect strangers.
"We were approached by the CEO of the Regina Food Bank to assist them with a special project to construct a new mezzanine that would accommodate more staff within their existing facility," says Bryan Miazga, Senior Project Manager, Regina, who has a long affiliation with the non-profit organization. "They were originally looking for volunteers and businesses to contribute time, money or materials."
Typical of the "Graham way," employees and management alike took the request one step further. The Regina team assisted the architect with developing the plans, used materials from local Graham suppliers, completed the estimates for the work and contributed all of the labour necessary to construct the 790 m2 (8,500 sq. ft.) mezzanine. In less than 14 hours, 15 employees volunteered their time to complete the CDN$15,000 project.
"It just goes to show that we are all of the same mind-set; that we are very fortunate and we should help others," says Miazga. "It's a gratifying feeling that no matter how small, each of us can contribute to the welfare of others who are less fortunate."
The Regina Food Bank is a charitable community-based organization working to eliminate hunger through nutritious food distribution, education and advocacy in cooperation with the community. At the heart of their program are 'food hampers,' distributed through a referral system with approximately 100 agencies made up of churches, schools and social-concerned organizations. Each month, approximately 8,000 to 10,000 people, almost half of whom are children, receive a hamper filled with donated food.
